Where did the week go?
Whooosh, and the week was over. Last week was very busy with a couple of long days at work. Combined with my efforts to get more sleep (reasonably successful) and working on my Scotland Summer 2004 travelogue that left not much time to read the blogs and in particular blog myself. Still my bookmarks are quite full with links to blog about. OK, let's go:
- It seems Germany is discovering the roundabout. Nice try. Come back once you've managed to get through the Magic Roundabout. Then we'll talk again.
- Apparently a lot of people think landline residential phones will soon be obsolete. A lot of people seem to make almost all their calls from their mobile, even when at home. Looking at the price for mobile phone calls I'm amazed, but then again there seem to be enough people with money to burn. Especially for international calls the costs are just ridiculous, and with family in Germany I have quite a few of those. Not to forget broadband internet access (which people believe to be all wireless soon). Well, the study was financed by Nokia. Go figure.
- Sometimes I get asked why I don't have a televison. Here's a part of the answer, I prefer listening to the "wireless". Apart from that I work on my websites, buy books, CDs and DVDs, read books, go out walking (weather permitting) and many other things. That doesn't leave any time for TV anyway.
- Reading reports like this scares me: The Crusade Against Evolution. Especially in combination with this. And those people are in power? Uh oh...
- I'm not an engineer or a programmer, but I still find a lot of points in this essay about e-mail and other workplace interruptions applying to my work as well. I work in a cube farm with low partitions and my desk is right at the corridor. Great for quick communication with colleagues, useless to get anything done where I need to concentrate on something for a longer time. Interesting dilemma. I'm still working on my e-mail management. I've turned off all notifications for ages now and am getting better and better at not constantly monitoring my e-mail. Reclaiming some space is a slow process though...
- There's not much on my desk at work, but I think I would resign if I worked for a company with this policy about office space and decoration. Don't they have any other problems?
I think that'll do for now. May be more tomorrow.
