The Crow Road

It was the day my grandmother exploded.

Probably one of the best opening sentences in a book ever. And also one of my favourite books: The Crow Road by Iain Banks. The story of Prentice, his exploding grandmother, the mystery of the disappearance of his uncle Rory, his unrequited love of the beautiful Verity and discussions about god and religion. Among others. And a happy end, kind of.

I must admit that I first heard of it when it was serialised for television by BBC Scotland in 1996. I watched the four part mini series and immediately bought the book. I've read the book several times since. I would have liked to watch the series again, but as it was only available on VHS video and I don't have either a Television or a VHS video recorder for several years now I wasn't able to.

To my delight I have just found out that The Crow Road will soon be available on DVD at Sendit.com (well, Amazon has it as well, but my watchlist at Sendit.com alerted me to it). This means I can watch it on my laptop whereever and whenever I want. I've preordered the DVD today.
