Just before Christmas I wrote a posting about GDP -vs- Happiness. I haven't had the time to read the essays and papers I linked to yet, but I hope to find the time this weekend.
A few days ago I found something in The Independent which reminded me of this topic and that a growing GDP can't be the only measure for success: Apparently the number of people "downshifting" remains constant despite the trend being labelled a fad when it started.
Seems to me that the question of GDP -vs- other measures will remain and gain in importance with more and more people weighing material gains against time and other values they realise to be important.
